Cabin 01

A genuinely accessible cabin, on a lake, at the end of a forest service road.

There is almost nowhere else in northern British Columbia a family can book this. At the moment somebody has to scroll to the first cabin on the cabins page to discover it exists.

  • Roll-in shower and three-piece bath
  • Hoyer lift, two sling sizes
  • Indoor plumbing, hot and cold running water
  • Full-time electricity and water
  • Wheelchair-accessible dock with an Elkhorn swim-lift

Four things between a family deciding and a family booked.

01

Seven Check Availability buttons, one contact form

Every cabin has its own button. All 7 of them go to tatuklake.com/book-now/, which is a message box. Nothing on the site knows which cabin is free next weekend, so neither does the person deciding whether to drive 78 kilometres of forest service road.

02

A booking takes an email, a phone call and a card read aloud

Your own booking page says so: "your booking request is NOT confirmed until credit card information is provided". Between a family deciding and a family booked there are three separate steps, and each one is somewhere they stop.

03

There is an arithmetic question in the way

The reservation form asks the visitor to answer "1 + 6 =" before it will send. It stops some spam. It also stops the least patient tenth of the people who wanted a cabin.

04

A typo on the page where the money happens

The booking page says a VHF radio is "reocmmended" for the logging road. Small, and worth telling you rather than not telling you, because it is on the last page before someone commits.

“Please note: your booking request is NOT confirmed until credit card information is provided.”

What already works

Every rate is published

Seven cabins, seven nightly rates, no "enquire for pricing". That is rarer than it should be and it should never change.

The accessibility is real and specific

A roll-in shower, a Hoyer lift with two sling sizes, and a wheelchair-accessible dock with an Elkhorn swim-lift — the first of its kind in northern BC. Almost nowhere else can say that, and it is currently a paragraph rather than a headline.

Open all year, and honest about the road

Summer fishing, autumn hunting, winter snowmobiling, and a plain warning about the forest service road. That is a resort that knows who its guests are.

What would change

Real availability behind the button

Seven cabins on a calendar. The button that says Check Availability then does that, and the answer is the same at eleven at night as it is at nine in the morning.

Take the deposit at the end of the form

The card stops being a phone call. Your own line about the booking not being confirmed can then be deleted, because it will be confirmed.

Lead with the accessible cabin

A family looking for a genuinely accessible wilderness cabin in northern BC has almost nowhere to go. Right now they have to reach cabin one to find out you exist.

Retire the arithmetic question

Modern spam filtering does the same job invisibly. Nobody should have to do sums to ask you about a cabin.
